The NerdzFactory Foundation, in partnership with Access Corporation, has launched the DigiSafe Programme to equip secondary school students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
Speaking at the launch, Director of NerdzFactory Foundation, Ade Olowojoba, emphasised the importance of the programme, noting that in today’s digital age, it is crucial for young people to be well-informed about online risks.
He expressed optimism that the DigiSafe Programme would leave a lasting impact on students, empowering them to navigate the digital world with confidence and caution.
His words: “This innovative initiative is focused on promoting online safety and digital literacy among secondary school students in Lagos State and Ilorin, Kwara State.
“As more young people are exposed to the internet, the risks associated with online interactions have become a significant concern for educators and parents alike. Recognising the need for proactive measures, the DigiSafe Programme was developed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
“The DigiSafe Programme adopts a comprehensive approach, starting with direct engagement with students through school assemblies and interactive sessions. In these sessions, students are educated about various aspects of online safety, including the importance of privacy, the risks of cyberbullying, and how to identify and avoid online scams. The goal is to foster a deep understanding of these issues and to encourage students to adopt safe online practices.”
He explained that one of the key components of the programme is the Training of Trainers (TOT) initiative, which is designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge required to effectively deliver online safety education. By training teachers, the programme ensures that online safety education is sustained and integrated into the regular curriculum, allowing for continuous reinforcement of the principles taught.
To further solidify the students’ understanding of online safety, the programme includes focused workshops led by the trained teachers. These workshops provide an opportunity for students to engage in more in-depth discussions and activities related to online safety, allowing them to apply what they have learned in practical scenarios.
“The programme also features an essay competition, where students can showcase their understanding of online safety through creative and analytical writing. The competition offers awards and recognition to the top-performing schools, motivating students to engage with the material on a deeper level,” Olowojoba added.
He noted that with over 4,000 students already reached in 12 secondary schools in Ilorin, the DigiSafe Programme was making significant strides.
