Nigeria is 7th largest country with high mobile subscriptions

Nigeria has been ranked seventh among the 15th largest countries with mobile subscriptions.

According to Jumia in its ‘Africa mobile trends 2016’ report, China is rated number one, followed by India, with the United States of America in third position. Egypt is positioned 11th; South Africa is world’s 14th largest country with huge mobile subscription.

According to the report, with about 1.7 billion global unique mobile subscriptions as at 2015, the figure is projected to hit 5.65 billion by 2020.

Specifically, unique subscriptions in Africa are 386 million with 41 per cent penetration as at 2015, projected to hit 518 million at 50 per cent penetration by 2020.

The report further disclosed that Smartphone adoption is gaining momentum with 3.25 billion units globally as at 2015 and a projection of 5.8 billion units by 2020. Africa is said to be home to 380 million Smartphones as at 2015 and it has been projected to hit 540 million by 2020 while, the sales rate sold worldwide inclusive of Africa were Asian brands with 70 per cent penetration.

Consequently, with the influx of mobile phones, Jumia report hinted that the average price of phones have declined from $280 to $100 in Nigeria as Smartphone sales soared from 349 per cent from 2013 to 2014 to 366 per cent from 2015 to 2016.

Already, the number of connected lines in Nigeria went from 215.7 million in March to 218.7 per cent in April, while the number of active telephone lines dipped from 148.7 million to 147.5 million in the period of under review, which showed lower Average Revenue Per User index.

The report further listed top smartphone brands on Jumia Africa to include Infinix; Innjoo; Xtouch; Samsung; Wiko and iTel.
