Galaxy Backbone Limited has unveiled a new Smart Digital Economy Roadmap aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation, strengthening national digital infrastructure, and expanding innovation across government and the wider economy.

The initiative, according to the organisation, is designed to deepen efficiency in public service delivery while positioning Nigeria to fully participate in the global digital economy.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a press conference marking activities for the organisation’s 20th anniversary.

Adeyanju said the roadmap marks a transition into a more innovation-driven phase of the organisation’s work, moving beyond infrastructure development into full-scale digital transformation support for government institutions, businesses, and citizens.

He explained that the new strategy is focused on expanding digital access, maximising existing infrastructure, and enabling smarter use of technology across all levels of governance and enterprise.

“The next chapter of Galaxy Backbone will not simply be about building infrastructure; it will be about maximising infrastructure. It will be about enabling innovation through smart digital solutions, expanding digital access, and supporting sub-nationals, businesses and institutions,” he said.

Adeyanju noted that the roadmap builds on two decades of sustained investment by successive administrations in shared digital infrastructure, which has helped reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and strengthen coordination across government operations.

He said Galaxy Backbone has evolved into one of Nigeria’s most strategic digital assets, providing connectivity, cloud services, and secure platforms for federal ministries, departments and agencies, state governments, development partners, and other stakeholders.

According to him, the organisation’s fibre network now spans nearly 30 states, forming a backbone for digital governance and public service delivery across the federation.

He added that its Tier III and Tier IV data centres remain critical national assets, offering secure, resilient, and reliable environments for hosting government applications and safeguarding sensitive data.

Adeyanju further explained that through its cloud infrastructure, particularly the 1Government Cloud, public institutions now access scalable digital services without the burden of independently building expensive systems.

He said platforms such as GovMail, collaboration tools, hosting services, and shared applications have significantly improved communication, coordination, and productivity across the public sector.

The GBB boss stressed that the true value of the organisation lies not in physical infrastructure but in its real-world impact on governance and citizens.

“The true value of Galaxy Backbone is not measured by kilometres of fibre, servers, or data centres. It is measured by impact; faster services, improved collaboration, stronger cybersecurity, and better service delivery to citizens,” he said.

Adeyanju said the new roadmap is also designed to prepare Nigeria for emerging global technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automation, data analytics, and advanced cybersecurity systems that are reshaping economies worldwide.

He stressed that Nigeria must decide whether to remain a passive consumer of these innovations or become an active contributor in shaping their impact, adding that Galaxy Backbone has chosen the latter path.

“We choose to lead. We choose to innovate. We choose to collaborate. And we choose to build,” he declared.

Adeyanju reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda and strengthening its role as a national digital infrastructure backbone.

He said the Smart Digital Economy Roadmap represents a bold step toward building a more connected, efficient, and inclusive digital ecosystem that supports economic growth and national development.

He also reiterated that Galaxy Backbone’s journey over the past 20 years represents the foundation phase, while the next phase will focus on unlocking the full value of that foundation for government, businesses, and citizens.

“The first twenty years were about building the foundation. The next twenty years will be about unlocking the full value of that foundation,” he said.

Adeyanju concluded that Galaxy Backbone remains committed to delivering secure, scalable, and innovative digital solutions that will drive Nigeria’s transformation into a fully digital economy.
