Justice for the Miners Must Go Beyond the Officers

Calls for justice are echoing both within and outside Nigeria following the tragic deaths of 37 arrested illegal miners in Niger State. While the federal government has launched an investigation into the incident involving the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, the focus must extend beyond just the officers on the ground.

These young lives, between the ages of 14 and 18, were tragically lost. It’s imperative that the individuals who orchestrated and profited from this illegal operation are identified and held accountable, not just the direct personnel involved.

The ongoing panel investigation is crucial. We urge them to thoroughly examine all aspects of this tragedy, ensuring that the true masterminds are brought to justice and that closure is provided for the grieving families of the 37 young men. Justice for the miners demands a complete reckoning.
