The Student Photography Enthusiast Club (SPEC), University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter has marked its one year anniversary. The event took place at the Orchard, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIBEN.

Welcoming members, president of the club, Chuck Anthony, said, there is more to celebrate, as the club had achieved a lot in the past one year.

Stressing that the need to form the club a year ago was borne out of the desire to connect student photographers to discuss their common issues and to make a living from photography while on campus, Anthony said the club’s membership strength has tremendously increased.

“Over a year ago, I thought of forming this club because UNIBEN security constantly harassed students with cameras. With SPEC, registered with the school, the harassment has stopped. Many persons complain that there is mass unemployment in the country, with SPEC, student photographers can now earn money from their passion, while still in school. In the past one year, we have had membership increase, taught them how to take pictures and edit photos, as well as, organise programmes,” he said.

On plans for the upcoming year, Anthony disclosed: “We plan to establish SPEC in schools around UNIBEN, like Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Benson Idahosa University; and Igbinedion University, Okada. We are also hoping to organise a national exhibition where we will connect models, photographers, fashion designers and artists. We also hope to make our presence felt on the social media and to keep on teaching members photography skills.”

Highpoint of the event was cutting of anniversary cake and launching of the SPEC magazine. The fun-filled event also saw members mingled and played different games.
