Workers in Lagos State have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to consider workers at this critical time of lockdown by suspending all loan deductions and give some tax relief to workers.

They also urged that he grants and facilitates interest free loans during the period with friendly repayment methods. Workers under the state’s council Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), noted that the measures became necessary following the sharp increase in dependents’ requests for support.
The state council’s chairman, Gbenga Ekundayo and the Secretary, Aladetan Abiodun, urged the government on the need for proper identification, co-ordination and distribution of palliatives to the vulnerable citizens, whose source of livelihood have been disrupted by the lockdown.

“It is indeed worrisome that some weak minds took to crime, to survive this challenging time. This may just be an indication that government will need to give out more palliatives by identifying those who are vulnerable, the youths who are jobless, senior citizens, the physically challenged and the widows.Â

“This must be done through various groups, associations and unions with strict supervision. You can imagine the huge financial waste that would have been recorded if the process is not well managed”, the union said.

The union also advised that the government could also adopt other means of accountability on the palliatives process by putting the figures of items and amounts given to each Local Governments, LCDA, groups, associations and unions in the public space so that the people can hold the various leaders and coordinators responsible and accountable.
