Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has inaugurated a panel to verify pension and gratuity payments in the 27 councils of the state.
According to him, the three-month audit is an effort to institute the culture of accountability and transparency in the councils’ finances.
Inaugurating the 15-man committee yesterday at Government House, Maiduguri, he disclosed: “The local government system is empowered to address various challenges of development at the grassroots.
“This is to infuse procedural expediency and administrative diligence in the payment of pension and gratuities in the councils.”
The committee, led by Ibrahim Lawalam, a retired council auditor-general, is to identify challenges associated with council payment system and how to overcome them.
