Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr. Ali Ahmad yesterday donated 100 bags of rice to teachers and local government staff in the state, describing it as a palliative measure over non-payment of salaries.

Ahmad said the development should not be viewed as a political move but was a personal contribution ‎to alleviate the workers’ sufferings especially in the month of Ramadan.

The Speaker handed over the item‎s to the executives of both Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Nigeria Union of local Government Employees (NULGE) at the former’s Secretariat along Asa Dam road, Ilorin. Ahmad hopes that his gesture would kick-start more palliative measures for the workers from privileged Nigerians.

He, however, assured them that the House is working round the clock with the Executive to ensure that non-payment of salaries in the local government is resolved as soon as possible. Ahmad revealed that the delay is as a result of the House investigation on happenings at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) that brought about the verification exercise being conducted by the state government.
