Looking frail and staring at nothing in particular, Jacintha Obairi, a 35-year-old woman, suffering from end-age kidney disease,is soliciting for financial help from kind-hearted individuals, organisations and the government for a kidney transplant.

The Simeon Hospital Medical Report, where she is being treated, read: “She requires a kidney replacement therapy to be alive. She is at present undergoing haemodialysis, a procedure through which undesirable metabolic waste products (urea and creatinine), water, potassium, etc. are removed from the body to avoid toxic accumulation of these substances that occur in a non-functional kidney. The other kidney replacement therapy option available to her is kidney transplant.”

According to the hospital report: “Kidney transplant is a better option to haemodialysis as it ensures an improved quality of life, considerable cost saving and reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with chronic kidney disease. Kidney transplant can be done in some Nigerian hospitals such as Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife and in some Indian hospitals.

“The financial requirements for the kidney transplant, which include cost of airfare and accommodation for both kidney donor and recipient to India and a six-month drug refill is about N7 million.

However, the patient would continue dialysis prior to the conclusion of the time arrangement for the kidney transplant, which would cost about N400,000 per month.
