The House of Representatives, in a bid to tackle the plights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, yesterday canvassed domestication of the Kampala Convention.

Chairman, House Committee on IDPs, Refugees and Federal Government Initiatives on North-East Region, Sani Zorro argued that the adoption of the measures would instill the confidence of international humanitarian partners desirous of finding solutions to the challenges.

He said this becomes crucial, as the danger posed by internal displacements and conditions of returnees have been heightened, not only in the northeast, but also everywhere in Nigeria.

He also enjoined the authorities to without further delay, appoint a responsible, conversant and committed commissioner and chief executive for the National Commission for Refugees (NCR) whose immediate terms of reference shall be to develop it’s capacities and reposition it.

Zorro said it was necessary so that it can deliver on all mandates specified in the Geneva Convention, including the additional protocol governing treatment of refugees and IDPs, as well as other regional treaties and agreements to which Nigeria is a signatory.
