President of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS), Prof. Ninuola Akinwande, has charged students to develop interest in mathematics, which is the backbone of any meaningful scientific development.
Speaking during the recent investiture of distinguished Fellows of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FNMS), at the Nigerian Academy of Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akinwande stated that the role of mathematics in national development does not need not be overemphasised, pointing out that evidence abound in countries that have got it right with the subject.
He said the three distinguished fellows attained their present statuses as a result of the interest they developed in the subject, which has brought them fame locally and internationally.
They new fellows include, former vice chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, former chairman of The Punch Newspapers, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola and Professor of Mathematics, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof. Michael Olusanya Ajetunmobi.
Akinwande said, “One of the ways to promote mathematical education in Nigeria is to recognise and honour those that have contributed to the development of mathematics. There are institutions working on promoting mathematics education, being one of the most dreaded subjects that students are scared of, we need to put in a lot of efforts to encourage people to learn mathematics.”
On the selection criteria adopted, he explained, “They all studied mathematics as their first degree. Ogunshola and Ibidapo-Obe have B.Sc Mathematics respectively, aside other achievements they have obtained over the years. Ajetunmobi in particular, did Mathematics in all his degrees. Additionally, they have contributed immensely to the advancement of mathematics in Nigeria.”
While calling on well meaning Nigerians to give necessary support to the teaching, learning and research in the subject, he commended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for instituting the Professorial Chairs in Mathematics in four Nigerian universities.
Speaking to The Guardian shortly after the award, Ibidapo-Obe, said the recognition is a wake-up call for students to study hard since mathematics is a core requirement for admission into the university.
He observed that the major problem with the learning and promotion of mathematics lies with teachers. “Once we can get teachers that are well motivated, well respected, well paid, the challenge would be solved.”
