Abubakar meets Buhari, seeks end to nation’s woes
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday appealed to Nigerians to support the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in resolving the nation’s problems.
He spoke to reporters after a meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where he stressed the need to urgently tackle the socio-economic challenges besetting Nigeria.
The plea comes barely 48 hours after another former leader, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, lamented the resurgence of ethnic-based violence nationwide, noting that at no other time since the end of the civil war had the country experienced threats of disintegration as now.
Obasanjo had made his position known on Tuesday while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) national summit in Abeokuta, warning the media against fanning the embers of disunity. He had also charged members of the fourth estate of the realm to lead the crusade for greater national integration and development.
He also noted that the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and Fulani herdsmen had fractured the nation.
Abubakar, who chaired the National Peace Committee during last year’s general elections, said: “We are still working, although quietly. We are working to make sure that there is peace in the country and all the political parties work amicably because each one has got a role to play.
“So, I hope the current administration, through the assistance of all Nigerians, will give a helping hand to make sure that we overcome these crises that are unnecessary.”
