Zamfara governor commits to developing state varsity

Bello Matawalle
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has said that his administration will neither falter nor be distracted from nurturing the state university to maturity.

In a statement, yesterday, the Commissioner for information, Ibrahim Dosara, claimed that some online platforms had published “fake” stories regarding Zamfara State University, Talata Mafara, criticising the government.

“These ungrateful individuals made some wild allegations against the government regarding the university without proper basic research and cross-checking of their facts before going to press.

“For the record, the immediate past administration in the state secured licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the establishment of the university. However, it may interest the general public to note that only the site of the university was identified and secured in Talata Mafara. There was no management staff, academic and non-academic staff for the institution,” he claimed.

According to him, it was Matawalle that evaluated the socio-economic worth of the university project, when he assumed office in 2019, and decided to pursue its development to its logical conclusion.

“All these were done by Matawalle’s administration from 2019 to date, amid the prevailing dwindling financial resources, pressing financial engagements of the state and the prevailing security challenges, which most often caused the deployment of funds to address,” he added.
