It was a very awakening experience to watch the stimulating documentary film, Scars of Honour, among an exclusive audience of senior executives, industry experts, opinion leaders, and other guests at the Mike Adenuga Place, Alliance Française, Ikoyi, Lagos, recently.
Created by ace filmmaking outfit, Evolving Light Studios, the documentary attempts to tackle the stigma that surrounds childbirth via Caesarean section.
Created by Evolving Light Studios, Axa Mansard And Molfix, the documentary first went viral online on March 11, 2022, when the Director/Producer, Bolu Essien posted a minute trailer on her Twitter page with the message, “As a mum who has had six layers of my abdominal wall opened to deliver my precious boy, I knew childbearing was a sacrifice for motherhood.
Sadly, when I saw how these women were either called weakly or stigmatised with statements like, ‘was it not your mate that pushed?’ I just knew I had to use my voice as a filmmaker to educate society on the matter.”
The documentary also featured a live CS procedure carried out at the Lagoon Hospital, Lagos, heightening emotions in the theatre.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer, Axa Mansard Health, Babatope Adeniyi, shared a firsthand experience regarding the misconceptions, ignorance, and sheer negligence of people in society regarding childbirth and how it has resulted in avoidable deaths.
Essien, on her part, said: “We look forward to announcing the home for Scars of Honour soon so everyone can have access to this great work of art. Let’s keep having these conversations and giving women the needed support.’’
