Seven die, others injured in Ekiti auto crash

Police warn motorists against reckless driving
About seven people were killed, while several others sustained injuries in a ghastly auto crash on Wednesday evening involving two vehicles in Gbonyin Local Council of Ekiti State.

The accident involved an 18-passenger bus and a Toyota car, which had a head-on collision along the Iluomoba-Aisegba highway.

An eyewitness told newsmen in Ado Ekiti, yesterday, that one of the vehicles, which was avoiding a pothole, lost control and collided with the oncoming vehicle travelling to Ado Ekiti.

The Guardian learnt that about 19 people were first said to have lost their lives during the accident, which was later refuted by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The Sector Commander, FRSC in Ekiti State, Mr. Olusola Joseph, who refuted the claim, said the total number of occupants in the two vehicles were 17.

Joseph said seven passengers lost their lives and the bodies had been deposited in the morgue.

The FRSC boss said: “Those who lost their lives had been deposited in the mortuary. They were all male passengers. They were occupants of the two vehicles.

“The passengers that suffered injuries are presently being treated at the Afe Babalola Multisystem hospital in Ado Ekiti.”

Joseph warned motorists against over speeding, saying it is the reason for unwarranted carnages on Nigerian roads.

Also,  Ekiti State Police Command, has vowed to place tougher control measures to check improper and reckless driving in the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, in a statement in Ado Ekiti,  yesterday,  urged motorists to avoid reckless driving, over speeding,  driving against traffic lights/signs, one way driving and driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs to avoid arrest and prosecution.

“While the Command will continue to prioritise the safety of life and property of Ekiti State citizens, they are kindly advised to be acquainted with the traffic rules and strictly abide by them to avoid any untoward incident,” he said.
