The Opobo Council of Chiefs has assured good security as she invited Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, as well as the international community, to join the kingdom in celebrating its rich cultural heritage at the coronation of the new Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom, His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI.

The coronation follows the demise of the former King, the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom , King Dandison Douglas Jaja, Jeki V,
on December 31st, 2025, at the age of 83.

The throne of King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most historic traditional institutions in the Niger Delta, with a legacy deeply associated with the courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership of King Jaja of Opobo.

According to the Council, The coronation of Jeki VI marks the continuation of an enduring institution and the opening of a new chapter in the life of the kingdom.”

The council also assured guests and residents of adequate security before, during and after the historic ceremony, scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town, Rivers State.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Monday, Vice Chairman of Alapu Kubiri, Alabo Princewill N. Wogo Dappa, said the coronation would mark a significant milestone in the history of the kingdom and provide an opportunity to strengthen relationships between Opobo and the wider international community.

He said the council, as part of preparations for the event, had embarked on a series of diplomatic and traditional visits to prominent traditional and national leaders, aimed at strengthening historic relationships and extending formal invitations to the coronation.

Among those visited, he said, were traditional rulers and former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

According to him, the coronation would provide a platform to showcase the heritage, traditional institutions, culture and history of Opobo, while bringing together indigenes and friends of the kingdom from Nigeria and the diaspora.

He said: “The coronation activities will culminate in the grand coronation on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town. This is a significant moment in the history of Opobo Kingdom.

Dappa said adequate security arrangements had been put in place to ensure the safety of guests and residents, urging everyone attending the ceremony to cooperate with measures being put in place for security, traffic management, protocol and general coordination.

He said the kingdom was preparing to receive guests from within and outside Nigeria, including members of the media, whom he urged to document and tell the story of Opobo to a wider audience.

He added: “On Saturday, September 26, 2026, Opobo will witness another defining moment in its history as His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, is formally crowned.
“We particularly wish to invite members of the press to be present, witness this grand event, report it and be part of history.

“We therefore invite the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join us in celebrating this historic occasion.

“We particularly appeal to the media to help tell the wider story of Opobo. It is a story of heritage, resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity.”
