Workers at the Governor’s Office, Calabar were yesterday, locked out by Governor Ben Ayade for reporting late to work.

This is the second time in Ayade’s administration that he will lock out his workers over lateness to work. The first was during his first tenure.

The governor, who arrived at the office early, ordered security operatives to lock the gate at 8:07 a.m.

It was not clear what penalty the governor would give to the errant workers but some of the staff blamed transport difficulties, galloping method of payment of salaries and the lack of motivation, which has dampened their enthusiasm and morale in the service

Recall that Ayade, while swearing in the new Head of Service, Ogbang Akwaji, challenged him to reinvent the civil and public service to meet world standards.

Some of the civil servants said there was no motivation at work, alleging that the governor was always globetrotting and that normal administrative procedures had been abandoned since he came into office.

But the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Christian Ita, said the governor had always detested any form of indiscipline and also showed reward to those committed to their duties.

He said: “The normal resumption time is 8 a.m. and if a governor can be in the office at that time, why can’t others be around.

“The governor has always shown reward and sanction to workers; he doesn’t hesitate to sanction when you err and also reward you when you are committed to duty.”
