Niger State Government has expressed worry over the rate at which flood wreck havoc on riverine communities, resulting from overflowing River Niger banks since the rain began this year.
The state Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Umar, gave the hint while speaking to The Guardian in Minna, at the weekend.

He explained that apart from destroying farmlands and villages, business premises also had their fair share of the floods, as businesses worth several millions of naira were destroyed.
Umar said: “River Niger water level has been increasing consistently every day; hence, the need for people living within Shiroro, Jebba and Kanji hydroelectric power dams to evacuate from their settlements to higher places where flood would not affect them.”
The Commissioner appreciated the state governor, Dr. Abubakar Bello, for his timely intervention in issues concerning humanitarian crises such as flood, fire outbreaks, and terrorist and bandit attacks, among others, noting that, in recent times, government had invested heavily in provision of relief materials to victims of various forms of disaster in the state.
He, however, reassured the people affected by recent floods across the state that government would not relent in her efforts of providing basic amenities to victims.
“My ministry and its agencies have intensified awareness campaigns aimed at enlightening riverine communities to relocate to safer place,” Umar added.
