Imo communities decry menace of herdsmen on their farmlands

Warn youths againstconsumption of hard drugs

Nineteen communities in Mbieri, Mbaitoli Council, have sent Save our Souls (SOS) messages to relevant authorities to intervene and take Fulani herdsmen out of their farmlands.

Addressing journalists, yesterday, in Owerri, after a youth summit, the Chairman of the youth association of the communities, under the aegis of Council of Mbieri Youths (CMY), Chinagorom Azuoma, regretted the devastating destruction of crops in farmlands owned by, mostly, old women and men, warning that they would, henceforth, resist it.

He lamented: “The council made a resolution, following incessant reports from different youth presidents in Mbieri, on the unwarranted destruction of crops and farmlands by herdsmen in virtually all communities in Mbieri and, therefore, warned that the council would no longer sit back and watch aged mothers and farmers cry helplessly over destruction of crops by herdsmen.”

According to him, an official report has been made to the Department of State Service (DSS), and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area to take necessary action of ensuring herdsmen vacate their farmlands.

Also, following the increasing rate of consumption of local hard drugs, popularly known as “Mpkuru mmiri,” the youths gave dealers one month to leave the communities, warning youths and those who consume such illicit substances to desist or be ready to face their wrath.

He informed that the youths had concluded plans to organise a one-day summit, with the theme, ‘Youths and The Dangers of Hard Drugs,’ to discuss the problem, which is aimed at stopping the menace.

He disclosed that the one-month ultimatum given to drug dealers to relocate from the 19 communities must be taken serious, warning that any erring dealer and consumer would face their sanctions.

Azuoma disclosed that a decision to organise a unity football cup competition, in Mbieri, during Christmas, was taken to re-unite the 19 communities, noting that a committee had been set up for it.
