There is mourning in the Delta community as a flood killed four people and sacked the king of Abala Kingdom, Igwe Fredrick Egbunokonye in Ndokwa East Local Council of Delta State.
The Guardian learnt that two of the deaths; include a 40-year-old lady and a young boy from Otuoku community.
Two others lost their lives in Oyede community, Isoko North Local Council when they have swept away while fleeing from Oyede town to a neighbouring community.
The flood has also sacked Igwe Fredrick Egbunokonye, who abandoned his palace to take refuge in Asaba, the state capital as his Palace was submerged by flood.
His council of chiefs also fled, leaving the towns empty.
Speaking in Asaba, the Royal father said the flood had overwhelmed the entire Ndokwa East council, adding, “the flood has been a major issue because the whole communities are submerged. And most people are not eager to relocate because of their farm produce. We were able to evacuate those who wanted to relocate”.
Egbunokonye said the state government attempted to open an Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at Ashaka, but the place was submerged and it did not take off at all.
“We are still pleading with those reluctant to relocate, but most of them borrowed money to invest in the farm. Most people are still in the village.
“The flood is overwhelming. We need Federal and State governments to assist the council because the entire Ndokwa East is submerged by flood. Abala-Oshimili is the worst hit, the flood is at the roof level,” he appealed.
The traditional ruler also appealed to the Federal Government to consider dredging the River Niger as a permanent solution to the annual flood in the area.
Also, Onowu of the kingdom, Elder Chike Ugwunmadu, Chiefs Henry Edozien and Fabian Sunny Okia blamed the state government for neglecting the area.
They said 70 per cent of the communities have been submerged, revealing that most residents in the flooded communities were reluctant to relocate as a result of unfulfilled promises on the part of the government in the past when the flood wreaked havoc in the area.
They blamed the government for not fulfilling some of the promises made to provide palliatives, as politicians always hijack the items belonging to flood victims.
Both President-General of Abala Clan, Fidelis Ogbuji and Abala Youth President, Ifeanyi Ogboli estimated that the farm produce so far damaged could be over N1 billion.
