Winners at the 16th Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Golf Tournament now have more money attached to the scholarship they earned for excelling at the yearly competition, which brings Nigeria’s best junior golfers to Lagos in search of honour and fortune.

At the 2022 competition, which ended at the Ikeja Golf Club last week, tournament sponsor, Alhaji Awa Ibraheem, announced the increment in the scholarship fund such that the first three players got N300, 000, N200, 000 and N150, 000 respectively in all categories in primary and secondary school levels. This is against the former scholarships prize money of N200, 000, N150,000 and N100,000 for all categories respectively.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Ibraheem explained the current situation in the country is different from what it used to be hence the need to increase the scholarship fund.

He said: “Today, times are hard, there’s inflation and parents are finding things difficult; therefore, the new scholarship prize money is now N300,000, N200,000 and N150,000 for the first three winners from primary to secondary schools.”

Expectedly, the announcement drew a lot of cheers from parents and the children as well as golf fans present. The ululation was heightened when Ibraheem announced that “any of the winners that gets university admission within Nigeria will be further funded to the tune of N1 million.”

Excited by the development, one of the parents, whose daughter benefitted from the largesse, said the sponsor, Ibraheem, has imparted immensely on children and deserved all commendations and honour to do better.

“My daughter, who is now a computer science graduate, was a beneficiary of this Alhaji Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Tournament scholarship. On this your birthday sir, I pray God gives you long life and prosperity to continue in your charitable work for humanity.”

Also thrilled by Ibraheem’s generosity, I-YESS International Golf Academy, represented by PGA of Nigeria Secretary, Jide Bolaji, commended the sponsor, adding that it would offer scholarship to winners of the event as well as expose them to participate in minor tours abroad.
