
The Guardian learnt that the suspects invaded the mosque at about 6.47 a.m. when some Muslim faithful were observing their morning prayers at the Central Mosque, located along Okoroda Street in Ughelli.
A resident, simply called Larry, said they were jolted from their sleep when they heard gunshots and loud cries from people inside the mosque.
Larry, a commercial driver residing in Ughelli, said the shooting created fear among residents.
A worshipper, who pleaded anonymity said: “We were frightened and we remained inside the mosque. We could only peep through the windows”.
He explained that as the shooting lasted, worshippers were crying for help, but after the gunmen left, some residents thronged into the mosque to see what happened.
He said that some kind-hearted residents assisted to evacuate the injured worshippers to a nearby hospital.
The Delta Police spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the attack, said that 11 worshippers were injured in the attack, but no arrest was made.
He said: “I just called the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Ughelli and he confirmed that 11 persons were injured in the attack at the mosque.
“However, the police have commenced investigation into the incident and will update you, as we work to unravel the culprits.”
