The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), yesterday, confirmed the death of 20 people in two separate accidents along the Ibadan-Lagos expressway, Ibadan, Oyo State and Mokwa in Niger State.

The Ibadan auto crash, which reportedly happened at about 6:30a.m., a few minutes drive before Guru Maharaj Ji, area was a lone crash that involved a Toyota Bus with registration number TRK 135 ZY.

18 persons all male adults were involved in the crash, out of which 10 were dead, six injured and two rescued without any injuries. The main cause of the crash, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is dangerous driving, road obstruction and excessive speed (Speed Limit Violation), which led to loss of control.

According to a statement signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal Corps Public Education Officer of FRSC, a copy of which was made available to The Guardian, six surviving victims rescued with different injuries during the rescue operations were given adequate first aid by the Corps’ medical rescue team before moving them to Ibadan Central Hospital for proper medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Adeoyo General Hospital Morgue, Ibadan.

The Mokwa fatal crash, which occurred at about 3:30a.m., involved a trailer transiting from Lagos, which had a head on collision with a Bus. 10 people were killed in the crash, nine of whom were confirmed dead on the spot and the remaining victim died in the hospital.

Another accident, which occurred in Otukpo, Benue State, at exactly 11: 35am, was a lone crash, which recorded zero fatality. The lone crash involved a bus with number plate – NAK 77 XA, which occurred as a result of a fallen tree that blocked the highway. The injured victims were taken to St. Daniels Hospital Otukpo for urgent treatment.

According to Kazeem, preliminary investigation conducted into the crashes was attributed to wanton violation of speed limit and indulgence in dangerous driving.

While quoting the Acting Corps Marshal of the Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, he said: “The Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, has decried the incessant violation of legal speed limits and noticeable traces of dangerous driving behaviours exhibited by drivers during the Christmas celebrations, and warned perpetrators of such bad road use culture to desist henceforth as the Corps will not spare them when apprehended.

“Expectedly, he has also directed the immediate deployment of a special squad to the affected part of the Otukpo-Makurdi highway to ensure speedy removal of the fallen tree as well as a traffic control team to engender free flow of traffic.”

He urged the public to always patronise the FRSC toll free line 122 and the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM, which are always available for road users to report emergencies at any time.
