The acting Vice Chancellor of Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo, Prof. Christopher Eze, has solicited Federal Government’s intervention over recent fire outbreak in the institution.
The cause of the fire outbreak, which affected the Business Administration and Accountancy Department blocks on January 25, 2023, was yet to be ascertained.
Speaking to newsmen, when he conducted staff of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), round the scene of the fire at the weekend, Prof. Eze expressed worry over the damages caused by the outbreak on the school and the psychological effects it has on staff and students.
He reiterated commitment of management of the institution towards safety of staff and students, as well as ensuring that they have comfortable atmosphere for academic activities.
The VC promised that the institution would be reckoned as one of the best in its areas of specialty and capacity development.
He said: “The staff offices was burnt. If not for efforts to get men of the Federal Fire service to come to our rescue, the situation would have been worse than what we had. It was indeed a terrible experience going by the structural damages and the psychological effects.
“I therefore urge the Federal Government through National Emergency Management Agency to intervene or come to our support. The outbreak destroyed everything in these staff office blocks. Though we lost academic documents but if we can get intervention from the Federal Government, it would go a long way in cushioning the effects of this outbreak. I shall continue to thank our state governor.”
