Senate Committee on Aviation has said it is supporting the move by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, to restructure the agencies under the ministry, to reduce the huge amounts spent on overhead and personnel cost.

Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Adamu Aliero, made the call when the committee visited the ministry yesterday in Abuja, in line with its oversight functions.

He described as unacceptable where some of the agencies were grossly over staffed and  having up to 10 general managers.

He said: “In fact, during our oversight visit to the agencies, we had cause to caution them. In terms of staffing, some of the agencies had up to 10 General Managers.

“A situation where 30 percent of capital goes to paying of salaries and overhead is not good for the country. Most of the agencies are overstaffed.”

Aliero, who also raised concern over the issue of safety and security at the airports, ordered that the equipment purchased to provide security at the airports be installed without further delay.

He commended the Minister for his efforts in the overall performance of the 2016 budget allocated the ministry, but called for a 90 percent implementation of the capital budget during the fiscal year.
