Speakership: Reps-elect embark on nationwide campaign for Betara

Muktar Aliyu Betara
Mr. Muktar Betara’s bid to emerge Speaker of the House of Representatives has received a major boost, following the resolve of newly elected members of the House in the six geopolitical zones of the country to rally support for him.

The lawmakers, yesterday, unanimously pledged to work assiduously for the actualisation of his aspiration.

The delegation, which departed Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, arrived Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State, about noon to create awareness on the need to have Betara as Femi Gbajabiamila’s successor after the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly next month.

The lawmakers, drawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), were led by Ismail Dabo (APC, Bauchi).

Justifying the initiative, Dabo said: “In furtherance of his campaign, Betara, who doubles as Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, has proved to the world that he is capable of leading the over 300 lawmakers.

“We do not want a bully as a leader in the 10th House of Representatives; that is why he is our anointed candidate and we chose to begin awareness from Enugu. The idea is to create more awareness on the man they believe will pilot the affairs of the green chamber in the next democratic dispensation.”

A member of the group said under anonymity: “I wish to state categorically that the nationwide solidarity tour, which was organised for our political leader and associate, Betara, is encouraging and promising. So far, we have been able to gather all members-elect and we will cover virtually all the states across the country. It will be a dream come true.

“The outpour of support is overwhelming and I can report that it is a worthwhile venture and a win-win for all of us, irrespective of political affiliation, tribe or religion. Without mincing words, the solidarity being enjoyed by Betara is unprecedented. I think it is even good for the President-elect and the APC to have a lawmaker like Betara express interest in the position of number four citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
