Amid the agitations for a postponement of the election, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has canvassed the immediate review of the electoral process.
The TMG’s Chairperson, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, made the appeal yesterday in an interview with The Guardian.
According to her, a review of the process is needed to allow the court to conclude all cases before publishing candidates’ names.
She urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to allow a repeat of the current saga in Ondo.
According to her, only a reversal of the existing system would make future elections to be credible, free and fair.
Akiyode-Afolabi implored the INEC and security agencies to ensure that money does not become a factor in the election, so that the culture of money politics would not mar its credibility.
She said: “One of the things that is coming out clearly in the coming election is the lack of internal democracy in the political parties.
“What we have seen in Ondo is not about candidates contesting in the election, but godfathers in various political parties determining who among the aspirants should contest the polls.
The TMG boss said the contending situation has made the electoral institutions very vulnerable.
She expressed concern that the court has now become a place where decisions concerning political parties and candidates are made.
“The court is taking away the decision from the people. So, looking at all the complications, it shows there is a need for us to review our electoral system.
“The whole game has put the voters at the receiving end and there is a likelihood that there would be voters apathy during the election,” she said.
Akiyode-Afolabi expressd concern that people might not likely vote if the candidate they wanted is not on the ballot paper.
Besides, voters may be afraid to go out and the possibility of violence is also high.
While warning against a repeat of violence in the state, she said the logjam had created a situation where a postponement would complicate the economic challenges that the country is facing.
