Kenneth Omeruo says he and his Super Eagles teammates know how important it is to be at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and that they must qualify on Sunday.
Osimhen said this during an interview with reporters at the Super Eagles’ Eko Hotel base on Wednesday ahead of the 2023 AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone.
“We are approaching the game with all seriousness, we know how important it is for us to qualify.
“We also know that it is better to do it with a game to spare so that we can relax and plan for the future.
“Everyone knows what we have to do. We are here to train and to make sure we go there to win.”
Omeruo also spoke about Super Eagles manager, Jose Peseiro’s invitation of four Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) players.
These are goalkeepers Victor Sochima of Rivers United and Olorunleke Ojo of Enyimba as well as defender, Chidiebube Duru of Rivers United and midfielder, Divine Nwachukwu of Bendel Insurance.
“For the national team, we need continuity and it’s good to give the younger players opportunities to play and test themselves as well.
“It is a welcome idea and they know they are always welcome,” the Leganes central defender stated.
On players’ busy schedule, he said “Of course if you play a whole season and you play up to 30 to 40 games you need time to rest.
“The national team, we hardly have time to play together, I think it is welcome,” Omeruo concluded.
A win over Sierra Leone will hand the three-time African champions a ticket to the next edition of the continental championship in Ivory Coast.
