The Yoruba Tennis Club (YTC), one of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous social and cultural institutions, has announced plans to host the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Dr. Umo Bassey Eno, as guest lecturer at the third edition of its Centenary Seminar/Lecture Series.

 

The lecture, which forms part of activities marking the club’s 100th anniversary celebration, is scheduled to hold on August 6, 2026, at the Greetings Hall of the Yoruba Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

 

According to the organisers, Governor Eno will deliver a lecture titled, “Democracy and the Imperative of Good Governance: Renewing Hope in Challenging Times.”

 

The club in a statement signed by the Honorary General Secretary of the club, Bro. Lookman Kotun.

 

said the Centenary Lecture Series was conceived as a flagship programme of its centenary celebrations to promote intellectual discourse on issues of national significance and generate practical ideas for Nigeria’s development.

 

It noted that the event would provide members and invited guests an opportunity to engage the Akwa Ibom governor on democratic governance, leadership, economic development, and the policies that have shaped his administration.

 

Governor Eno, a businessman, management professional, clergy member and public servant, is widely recognised for his people-centred approach to governance. Since assuming office, he has prioritised policies aimed at economic growth, infrastructure expansion, social welfare, entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Akwa Ibom State.

 

The Yoruba Tennis Club described the governor as a leader whose philosophy is rooted in integrity, compassion, human capital development and inclusive governance.

 

Founded in 1926, the Yoruba Tennis Club has remained a prominent platform for fellowship, sportsmanship, intellectual engagement and public service. Over the past century, it has brought together distinguished Nigerians from various professions to foster dialogue, leadership and national development.

 

The club’s centenary celebration is themed “A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition,” reflecting its commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing future opportunities.

 

Speaking on the significance of the lecture series, the club said the programme continues its tradition of promoting conversations that are substantive, thought-provoking and relevant to national development.

 

The Chairman, Vice Patrons, Board of Trustees, Elders and members of the Yoruba Tennis Club have invited members of the diplomatic corps, academia, the organised private sector, professional associations, government institutions, the media and indigenes of Akwa Ibom State to attend the event.
