Police Sergeant nabbed for conniving with motorists to abduct unsuspecting persons

Operatives of Lagos State Police Command have arrested a Police Sergeant who connived with motorists to pick up unsuspecting commuters  and take them to police formations and/ or Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) premises with a view to detaining them and later collect money from them.

The suspect was arrested with his accomplice, following complaints of their activities by notable Nigerians. Parading the suspects among others, the Police Public Relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said he came across a video that went viral on social media by a lawyer on the activity of some policemen in Korope Bus Stop, picking civilians and taking them to police formations, threatening to either impound their vehicles or send them to jail for traffic offences, and out of fear, the civilians would part with money for their freedom.

“When we got wind of this, we started trailing them and eventually, we have arrested two out of the members of the gang; but, according to the video, the lawyer said they are four.

“Two are currently on the run and we will soon get them. Unfortunately, one of the aspects is a 36-year-old policeman and deserter, Oluwaniyi Ojenusi.

“He was serving in Lagos and had been transferred to Osun State since last year, he refused to report at his current base,  but rather remained in Lagos with some criminals perpetrating these nefarious activities.”

“His partner in crime is Maxwell Adiba, 42, a commercial driver, who would claim to be a police officer to pick these unsuspecting innocent persons and drive them round town for hours before collecting money from them.

“We particularly want to thank the lawyer for bringing this act of criminality to the notice of the public and we enjoined other Nigerians to join hands with the police in exposing similar ills in the society.

“Let me assure Lagosians that the two others on the run are closely being monitored and in a very short time they will be brought to justice,” he added.
