Tragedy occurred, yesterday, in Enugu as a multiple road crash, involving a trailer and other smaller vehicles along the dilapidated Ugwuonyeama hill, 9th Mile Corner, Ngwo, claimed six lives.
Among those who died were four members of a family, a man, his wife, son and daughter, said to be driving into Enugu capital.
Also, 15 other travellers sustained injuries in the incident and were rushed to Our Saviour Hospital, 9th Mile Corner and Enugu State Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Park lane, Enugu, for treatment.
The Guardian gathered that the trailer loaded with gas and descending the sloppy road had lost control following a brake failure and rammed into the long queue of vehicles.
The vehicles involved included: a bus belonging to GUO Motors moving from Ebonyi State to Lagos, a jeep carrying five members of one family and four other vehicles.
Two persons died in the bus, four other members of one family travelling in a Jeep Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) also died, while several others sustained injuries.
The only survivor from the family of five was being treated at Our Saviour Hospital, Ninth Mile Corner.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Joseph Toby, said only five died from the multiple crash, stressing that several others sustained injuries.
He stated that the quick intervention of Fire Service and soldiers prevented more casualties.
“It was a multiple accident involving six to seven vehicles and it was ghastly. We are still attempting to rescue the survivors and free the road,” he said.
Chief Medical Director of Our Saviour Hospital, Ninth Mile Corner, Ngwo, where many of the victims were being treated, Dr. Emmanuel Ngwu, however, confirmed that six dead bodies recovered from the accident were deposited in the morgue of the hospital.
“We have been busy and battling since morning to treat those with injuries. No fewer than fifteen people were involved and those at the hospital are responding to treatment,” he said.
But a source told The Guardian that the incident occurred at about 11:00a.m, adding that one of the victims in critical condition was rushed to the Enugu State Teaching Hospital.
