The traditional ruler of Ayede, Odo-Ala, in Akure North Local Council of Ondo State, Oba Bakare Jimoh, has expressed concern over the waning interest among younger generation in embracing the cultural heritage and values of their forebears.
The monarch, while highlighting the importance of cultural preservation, appealed to the government at all levels to provide support to traditional rulers in uplifting and preserving the diverse cultures of various communities.
Oba Bakare gave the charge during the celebration of Ifa festival, along with two other deities, which also coincided with his birthday, in the community. The festival served as a platform to showcase the rich cultural traditions and customs of Ayede.
The monarch said by investing in preservation of cultural heritage, governments would not only safeguard the identities of various communities but also create opportunities for tourism, economic growth, and international collaborations.
Oba Bakare, who expressed worry over lack of enthusiasm by the younger generation, stressed the need for youths to understand and appreciate historical significance and uniqueness of their cultural heritage.
He further maintained that preservation of cultural traditions is not only crucial for maintaining a sense of identity but also for promoting unity and fostering pride among community members.
The monarch also drew attention to the growing interest shown by foreigners in participating in and celebrating various African cultures and festivals
He described the interest as a testament to the exceptional nature of African heritage.
He urged the younger generation to actively engage in cultural activities, festivals and traditional practices, stressing that these were essential to passing down ancestral knowledge and wisdom to the next generation.
