Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, has expressed optimism about the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja’s ability to address the worsening insecurity in the country.
In a statement personally signed by him, Ugochinyere highlighted General Lagbaja’s profile, indicating that he is competent and well-experienced to tackle the security challenges facing the nation, especially in the South-east region.
The lawmaker expressed concern about the deteriorating state of insecurity in the country, particularly in Imo State. However, he commended the Army Chief for issuing a recent marching order to address insecurity in the South-east.
Ugochinyere urged the COAS to utilise all available resources and strategies to bring an end to the insecurity prevalent in the South-east zone. He assured the COAS that federal lawmakers from the zone would provide the necessary legislative support to achieve lasting peace.
The statement reflects the hope and confidence placed in the new COAS to lead efforts in tackling the security challenges in the country, with a specific focus on the South-east region.
Ugochinyere said: “I commend the Army Chief for the recent marching order he gave to end insecurity in the South-east. It’s impressive that the COAS appointed and posted some senior officers to ensure they do all it takes to return peace in the South-east region.
“The federal lawmakers from the South-east will provide the needed legislative support to the Army to improve security in the South-east. Security in the South-east has deteriorated, particularly in Imo State with frequent attacks by armed persons. The attacks often target indigenes, security agencies and facilities. Hundreds of people have been killed, kidnapped or injured in such attacks.”
