
Hundreds of girls and women have benefitted from empowerment and skill-up programmes recently carried out by Akon Uno, the creative director of Swanky Designs.

The programme, which is in its sixth edition, ignited a transformative wave of women empowerment with the successful completion of training events for many women in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.
Ms. Uno, also the President of JCI Uyo City for 2023, has long been a devoted advocate for women’s empowerment, harnessing her unwavering commitment to uplift and equip women with essential skills.
The event, held from July 19th to 22nd, 2023, at the Mkpo Amaa Change Initiative family house in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, marked a significant milestone in fostering gender equality and women’s empowerment in Southern Nigeria.
This year’s theme, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, showcased Ms. Uno’s dedication to shaping a future where women flourish as entrepreneurs.
The annual training event, which focuses on enhancing valuable entrepreneurial skills, featured five essential skill modules including hand stitch wigging, hair ventilation, hair treatment and revamping, bridal hand fans, and packaging paper bag mastery.

Participants were equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to excel in their chosen fields, thereby contributing to the growth of the local economy.
One of the noteworthy highlights of this year’s initiative was the “Pad a Girl Campaign,” an effort led by Ms. Akon Uno herself. The campaign, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Promoting Good Health and Well-being, provided menstrual hygiene support to 400 girls with special needs.
The campaign’s execution on July 24th, at The Ministry of Education Special Education Centre, Mbiabong Etoi, Uyo, demonstrated Ms. Uno’s holistic approach to empowerment, ensuring the overall well-being of women in the community.
The success of the annual women empowerment and skill-up training, coupled with the impactful “Pad a Girl Campaign,” echoes the values and objectives of the Akwa Ibom State Arise Agenda 2. Ms. Akon Uno’s unwavering commitment to her community and her visionary leadership continues to set new benchmarks for empowering women and shaping a brighter future.

The success of the 2023 edition of the programme was powered by partnerships with organisations such as Junior Chamber International (JCI) Uyo City, Royalty Youths Ambassadors, Mkpo Amaa Change, TCĂ‘ Uyo Pearls, Jjal Beauty Salon, and Wakky Signatures.
