Over 14 years construction of East-West road unacceptable, says N’Delta council

Tasks Niger Delta Ministry, NDDC on completion
Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council (NDENYC) has expressed dissatisfaction over continuous delay in the construction and completion of the East West Road, which the Federal Government commenced about 14 years ago.

NDENYC President General, Terry Obieh, made this remark, yesterday, in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, after the group’s yearly general meeting as part of events to mark the International Youths Day Celebration.

According to Obieh, the body cannot predict the actions of youths in the  future, as the road is fast becoming a death trap for commuters.

He said: “While we commend the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for his innovative leadership and dedication to duty, we urge him to, as a matter of urgency, prioritise the completion of the East West Road that has been under construction, in conjunction with the Ministry of the Niger Delta Affairs, for over 14 years and still counting. We cannot anticipate the action of the youths in the near future as the road is becoming a death trap for commuters.”

He further called on Ogbuku to deploy creative means to tackle the scourge of water hyacinths in waterways across the region, assuring of NDENYC’s commitment to promotion of good relations between traditional rulers, chiefs of the Niger Delta, the government and other agencies responsible for tackling the menace in the region.

He disclosed that the body has a passed vote of confidence on Ogbuku in appreciation of  his commitment to the journey of evolution and pathway to unleashing enormous capacity in the years ahead.

He said: “Arising from our meeting designed to x-ray development issues about the region, vis-a-vis NDDC’s critical role in the region under the leadership of Ogbuku, the vote of confidence on him is in appreciation of his unwavering commitment to the journey of evolution and a pathway to unleashing enormous capacity in the years ahead.”

“As Nigeria awaits President Bola Tinubu to unveil the portfolio of ministers recently confirmed by the National Assembly, the NDENYLC wishes to pass a vote of confidence on the NDDC boss, based on his ongoing developmental programmes for youths in the region, urging the incoming minister to allow him finish strong.”
