Four die in land dispute, community clash in Enugu

The police in Enugu State, yesterday, confirmed the killing of at least four persons over a communal clash that erupted between two communities in the state.
 
The Guardian gathered that natives of Oyofo and Awha communities in Ezeagu Local Council in Enugu State had engaged in a free-for-all fight last Friday over ownership of land that resulted to killings, injuries, and destruction of property.
 
It was further gathered that about five motorcycles and tricycles were burnt while unspecified number of people sustained injuries. The clash was said to have started at about 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
 
Spokesperson for Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident in a statement, added that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the deployment of police officers to the affected communities.
 
He said that normalcy has been restored to the affected areas, while 12 persons directly involved in the clash have been arrested.
 
He said: “The Commissioner of Police (CP), Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the deployment of police operatives to Oyofo and Awha villages in Ezeagu Local Council, following the communal clash between the villages on August 11, at about 10:00a.m.
 
“The deployment is to maintain the normalcy already restored in the area after the clash, which led to the murder of four males and the burning of one tricycle and five motorcycles.
 
“Twelve male suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash and murder of the victims, while preliminary investigation shows that the clash was as a result of land ownership dispute between the villages. Further development shall be communicated, please.”
