Magistrate adjourns arraignment of man over arson, assault on police officer

A magistrate’s court sitting at Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned arraignment of a 27-year-old man, Wasiu Akingbola, for alleged arson and assault on police officer on September 25, 2023.

Akingbola was slammed with four-count charge bordering on assault, arson, inflicting bodily harm and belonging to a secret cult.

The police said his offences contravened the provision of Sections 411, 170, 173/174 (b), 341 (a), and 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

He was brought before Magistrate Sakirat Obasa but his plea was not taken, as the court ordered the case file sent to the Director of Public Prosecution’s (DPP) for advice.

However, the prosecutor, Inspector Kokoye Olusegun, told the court that the defendant and others still at large committed the offences at about 3:00a.m. on May 29  at the Oregun Police Post in the Oregun area of Lagos State.

Olusegun said that the defendant, along with  about 15 hoodlums belonging to the cult group known as supreme Eiye Confraternity, instigated the attack on the police post.

He said the defendant, along with his accomplices, demanded the officer on duty, Inspector Eche Emmanuel, to release one Inspector Kabiru for them, but when they were told the officer was not stationed at the outpost, but the hoodlums beat up the officer on duty, set the police outpost on fire and ran away.

The prosecutor also told the court that defendant was arrested at Alausa Police Station for another matter as he was recognised by the officer on duty at the Oregun outpost and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was alerted.

As the defendant’s plea was not taken, the Magistrate subsequently adjourned the case for DPP advice.
