The Kano State Government has issued a directive to suspend all school fee increments in private primary and secondary schools across the state.

The directive was disclosed by Governor Abba Yusuf’s Special Adviser, Baba Umar, stating that the state government has ordered the suspension of any increments in school fees across all private educational institutions.

Umar stated that, as part of the suspension, the sale of books and uniforms by private schools has also been revoked.

He disclosed that the directive aligned with the commencement of the issuance of application forms for the registration of private schools following the withdrawal of the certificate of operations of the schools by the state government.

Umar added that the issuance of application forms for registration of the operations of private schools in the state will end on Friday, August 18, noting that the new registration seeks to ensure the availability of a database for monitoring.

“The essence of the new registration is to ensure we have an accurate database for the government’s policy and monitoring, to sanitise the sector. All that we are rolling out for private school operations in the state is in line with the law established in May 2014,” Umar stated.

He, however, urged parents to report any school that is asking them for a fee increment, adding that “no school will be allowed to unilaterally increase school fees again.”

Umar added that because the school operators are not nonprofit organisations, the state government will similarly make sure that parents pay school fees for their kids at the same time.

He also stated that anyone found operating a private school who failed to submit their application by the deadline would face sanctions.

Recently, the state government revoked operational certificates from more than 4,000 private primary and secondary schools operating within Kano State.

The government has also instructed proprietors of private schools in the state to make a fresh application for the renewal of their certificates.
