Police launch manhunt as gunmen kill two personnel, injure others in Delta, Rivers

A gang of armed men have reportedly killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) (names withheld) attached to the Isiokolo (Otoro-Agbon) Police Division in Ethiope East Local Council of Delta State.

This was even as the Rivers State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the death of an officer shot by suspected gunmen last Wednesday.The Guardian learnt that the ASP was shot dead by gunmen who invaded the community in a motorcycle and started shooting sporadically to scare anyone that might hinder their operations.

It was also gathered that the gunmen shot at the policemen mounting a checkpoint close to the Isiokolo Police Station and killed one of them on the spot while two others sustained bullet wounds and were rushed to the hospital, where they were being treated.

According to sources, the incident occurred last Friday. The attack reportedly forced a crack team of policemen and sister security agencies to launch a raid on Isiokolo, Kokori and other surrounding towns in the area.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the killing, explained that it was not a raid on the station as the hoodlums shot from distance to the policemen.

Edafe stated that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident, adding that a serious manhunt to smoke out the suspects from hiding was ongoing.

The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement, disclosed that the victim of the gunmen attack was a male Inspector of Police attached to the Department of Operations in Bayelsa State.

She disclosed that the Inspector, whose name was withheld, was shot in the head while escorting his principal to a hotel in Port Harcourt, adding that the hoodlums carted away the victim’s rifle and beret,

She said: “On 25/08/2023 at about 2030hrs, information was received that one Inspector ‘m’ attached to the Department of Operations, Yenegoa, Bayelsa State, was fatally shot on the head while escorting his principal around Landmark Hotel at Oroworukwo Olu Obasanjo Port Harcourt.”

She further explained that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and to recover the rifle, adding that the body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
