A 60-year-old woman, Odubiro Adebisi, has appealed to Nigerians to assist her in raising N20 million for kidney transplant. A copy of Adebisi’s medical report issued by the Babcock University Teaching Hospital and made available to The Guardian showed that the patient is being managed for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and would require a renal transplant.
The report, dated September 4, said Adebisi is a known hypertensive referred to the hospital facility on account of vomiting, generalised body weakness, abdominal pain, and difficulty in breathing.
“There was associated weight loss, reduction in urinary output, and passage of frothy urine. There was also a history of pedal swelling and lack of blood for which she received three pints of blood.
“PCV on admission was said to be 15.2per cent, urea was 37.5 mmol/L and Creatinine was 1.269 mmol/L. She is being managed as a case of acute exacerbation of CKD secondary to likely chronic glomerulonephritis complicated by uremic encephalopathy,” the report added.
According to the report, “Adebisi would require more dialysis sessions and interventions, while adding that the definite treatment would be renal transplant, which would require preliminary tests and post-operative investigations. An overhead cost of about N20 million would be required, as well as post-operative medication.”
ALSO, one of the doctors and medical officer at the hospital renal unit, Dr. Solomon Nweajike–Solomon, has confirmed Adebisi’s health conditions. He said she has to do dialysis weekly, which sometimes requires blood transfusion because the kidney produces erythropoietin to make bone marrow produce red blood cells.
“Her kidney is not producing erythropoietin, she needs to take erythropoietin injection until she gets another kidney,” he said. Additionally, in a letter Odubiro’s family wrote to solicit support on her behalf, they said she had been advised by her doctor to go for a kidney transplant, adding that the recent tests carried out indicated that her two kidneys were no longer functioning as normal.
Adebisi could be reached through her First Bank account number, 3050472812 with Odubiro Marian Adebisi as account name, and can be contacted through: 09024203369.
