The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has revealed plans to collaborate closely with the United States (U.S) Embassy so as to advance Human Rights in Nigeria.
This was disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) following Tuesday’s working visit of the newly-appointed Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S Embassy, Mr. Timothy Smith to the office of NHRC Executive Secretary (ES), Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN).
“Mr. Smith who also serves as the Political Counsellor, expressed his deep appreciation for the vital work carried out by the NHRC,” the Commission wrote.
“He also conveyed his eagerness to further enhance his understanding of the Commission’s work to effectively fulfill his responsibilities.”
In response, NHRC ES Ojukwu extended his gratitude for the unwavering support that the Commission has received from the U.S. Embassy.
The NHRC boss also reaffirmed its strong commitment to collaborating closely with the new Deputy Chief of Mission to advance the cause of Human Rights in Nigeria.
The Commission serves as an extra-judicial mechanism that safeguards the human rights of the Nigerian population.
It also provides avenues for public enlightenment, research, and dialogue in order to raise awareness on Human Rights issues.
