Executive Director of Centre for Individual and Child Development, Chizoba Akunne, has warned that tribal bias poses a serious threat to national unity .
She said that Nigeria has about 525 languages and there has always been an underlying tribal tension in Nigeria but as Youths, we need to question the voices of these tensions to discover the how and why such tribal biases are personal and are not the total truth.
Addressing the fifth yearly workshop, organised by her organisation, with the theme, “Fostering National Unity and Oneness” in Lagos, Akunne, who appreciated the nation’s diversity, restated their commitment to promotion of every tribe and dismantling of existing prejudices.
She submitted that national unity and oneness could only be actualised when Nigerians heal emotionally and find forgiveness.
“We need to seek healing for our individual hurts so we can unplug every blockage to our creativity that is preventing us from living our best lives,” Akunne appealed.
Other speakers addressed the vices of social media usage: addiction and spread of information that fuel tribal tension .
Speaking on the latter, President, African Union Youth Assembly, Nigeria, Ambassador Olufunmi Olaosun, harped on sieving available information to foster unity across ethnic groups.
She suggested that before sharing any information, one should verify for authenticity. On abuses, misinformation and disinformation, Social Media Manager, Danikal Management Consult, Coach Alfa Abena, reviewed daily social media usage, effect and addiction, stressing the need to find productivity in the midst of the noise.
“We need to create a system around the use of social media, so we do not get swept away by its emotional tide,” he advised.
