How I started my own media brand

When he came up with the idea for Sabi Radio in 2021, a news site that gives commentary and follows trending stories and the actions of celebrities in real time, Christopher Sabi was broke, unemployed, and had no blogging experience. But he believed in his idea. Sabi’s story begins like many others, with a simple Instagram account. In 2021, he launched his profile, @sabiradio, as an outlet to share his interests and hobbies with the world. He’d spend hours watching the BBNaija show, and post updates based on the activities of the housemates. Sabi Radio attracted almost 200,000 followers within its first three months, which led to the Vanguard News calling it the Gen Z’s New York Times. Little did he know that this virtual canvas would soon transform into a powerful platform.

Sabi’s focus has always been on the news and celebrities that interest the African millennials and Gen Z community. In addition to giving plenty of blog space to BBNaija breakout stars, Sabi Radio covers breaking news and political topics — from #EndSARS to #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary — from the point of view of people of the millennials.

Today, the Sabi Radio properties — which include a website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube pages — have amassed a sizeable following. Sabinus, 28, says he wants to create nothing short of a media empire.

From a young age, I filled notebooks with my thoughts, observations, and imaginative tales. These words were my escape, a way to transcend the harsh realities of my upbringing. My parents, though they couldn’t provide me with many material possessions, encouraged my love for words and creativity.

As a teenager, I discovered the world of blogging. With a beat-up laptop and a determined spirit, I started sharing my writings online. My first blog was a mix of personal stories, reflections on life in my community, and heartfelt poems. Despite the limited resources at my disposal, my writing shone with authenticity and a unique voice.

I created a community for my followers, to be a part of something. We have a lot of offers on the table from studios wanting to invest to make us a digital empire. I intend to partner with someone who will allow that to happen. I want to build a digital network and create scripted shows, not just celebrity and entertainment news.

I have to convince myself every day I can do it. I’ve never had anyone in my family reach this level of success, or even have this kind of opportunity. I’m still dealing with some of the trauma I went through as a child because I blocked it out growing up.

But nothing I went through has stopped me from being successful. If anything, it’s contributed to my journey. It inspired me to find a creative outlet in writing. I think that my story is proof of what can happen when you believe in yourself.
