According to Layiwola, “Body, Blue and Beyond builds on my previous solo exhibition, Indigo Reimagined (2019), which explored the historical references to sartorial traditions and textile production processes in Southwest Nigeria.”
This new iteration places the body as a canvas for adornment: the ripping of fabric in the performance and video peice titled, ‘Body Blue’ is a metaphor for dismantling colonial structures. It also symbolises the tearing of mass-produced copies of indigenous àdìre textiles flooding the local markets in Nigeria.
“In Body, Blue and Beyond, the human body plays a pivotal role in conveying its essence in both labor and leisure within the workspace; the colour, ‘blue’ finds new expression to accomodate a spectrum of colours in today’s textile and fashion world; and ‘beyond’ serves as a projection into the future of textile production in Africa,” the artist says.
