Worried by what they termed ‘indiscriminate use of firearms’ by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), which has resulted in killings of Nigerians in land borders and checkpoints, Youths in Yewaland, Ogun State, have called for a change of approach to arresting smugglers.
Rising from a three-day conference, themed: “Yewa youth leadership conference: Empowering youth, leadership, civic engagement and active citizenship conference,” the group called for a review of the Nigerian Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA), saying the Service must improve on how it trains its personnel in the handling of firearms.
The conference, which featured panel sessions on leadership, business, and border security, was aimed at empowering youths, and fostering a culture of leadership, civic responsibility, and active engagement in shaping communities in the area and the world at large.
In a communiqué issued after the conference, the participants advised the agency to be civil, professional and deploy modern technology in the fight against smuggling in Yewaland .
