‘Why govt can’t fully fund public varsities’

Director General of Nigeria Country Department of the African Development Bank, Lamin Barrow has rationalised that the government could not be left to fund public universities alone.

The Gambian, who spoke at his investiture as a UI@75 Ambassador, acknowledged that the training he received at the University of Ibadan prepared him adequately for his post-graduate studies and career.

He said UI alumni must give back to their alma mater, noting that the institution has a rich reservoir of old students that could be relied upon to develop it. Barrow pledged to assist the university on its thematic projects.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, said the institution had to fall back to the alumni, knowing their pedigree and the respect they command in the society.

Meanwhile, former President of the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education, Chief Bola Doherty, at the weekend, warned the government of the negative consequences of a hike in tuition of higher institutions across the federation. She emphasized that the decision could force several students out of school, thus creating more problems for the country.

The educationist, who is the proprietress of Bola Immaculate School, gave the warning during an interview with journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State.
She urged the current administration to hands off the petroleum and electricity sectors.
