New ‘X’ users to pay $1 yearly subscription fee

Microblogging platform, X has unveiled a new programme that will require new, unverified accounts holders to sign up for a $1 yearly subscription to be able to post and interact with other posts. Though, not yet global, X however, said the programme is currently being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines.

This, however, is not going to affect unverified existing users on the platform. X said new users, who opt out of subscribing at the signup stage will only be able to take “read-only” actions, like reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts.

It explained that at signup, new users would be able to select from subscription options of $1 fee, X Premium, or Verified Organisations.
X said the new programme was not motivated by profit but to fight spam.

“This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount. It is not a profit driver. And so far, subscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale.

“This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spammers on X, while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount. Within this test, existing users are not affected,” the company stated.

In a tweet yesterday, X Chairman, Elon Musk, disclosed the reason for the yearly subscription fee. According to Musk, the charge will reduce spam and automated bot accounts.

“Correct, read for free, but $1/year to write. It’s the only way to fight bots without blocking real users. This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be 1000X harder to manipulate the platform.”

This new programme is in addition to X’s subscription of $8 a month. Musk has been clear from the beginning of his Twitter takeover that he thinks charging will impede bot armies, though it’s estimated that a very, very small percentage of users are paying.
