Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, and his counterpart in charge of gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, have reiterated need for collaboration among African countries to harness existing oil and gas resources.

This was as stakeholders at the International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science & Technology (ICHST), held at Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) conference centre in Abuja, stressed that the continent needs homegrown solutions to exploit resource for energy security.

Secretary General of African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO), Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, said with about one-third of Africa’s 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserve and about a third of the continent’s 620 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserve, the strategic role the industry plays and shall continue to play in the economic life of the nation cannot be overemphasised.

Executive Secretary, Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Ahmed Galadima Aminu, noted that oil and gas producing nations have a unique opportunity to embark on inclusive energy transition and chart a course toward a sustainable future.

According to him, the industry grapples with a myriad of issues, including technological hurdles, research limitations, and dwindling landscape of investments and finance.

The Chief Executive, Petroleum Training Institute, Dr Henry Adimula, said the conference signifies potential to shape the destiny of the oil and gas industry with the theme, ‘The Future of the Oil and Gas Industry: Opportunities, Challenges and Development’.
