A vocal expressionist, Stephanie Ugbeye, has emerged winner of the 2023 Africa Podcast and Voice Artists (APVA) awards.

At the virtual ceremony, Ugbeye won in the best spoken word record and voice over documentary performance categories.

Ugbeye said: “It’s a great honour to be identified as an African voice of the future. I thank everyone who worked with me on the production of the spoken word record, titled, ‘My Mother’s Wig’.”

She explained that the poem was performed after the demise of her mother in October 2022.

“It was my way of appreciating her life and being thankful for her love, warmth and strength.

“Her wig was one of the items that I retrieved after she passed and so the poetic rendition is my way of appreciating her life and having her close to my heart,” she explained.

She thanked Gamie and the creative team at Upparuum Studios for their contributions to the record’s production.

“I would like to thank everyone who took out his or her precious time to vote for me. I do not take it for granted. Your voting for me was not just a mere activity, it was your appreciation and endorsement of my work, and so, I’d like to thank you for speaking to the winning side of me,” she said.

Ugbeye is a professional media consultant, screen and voice actor, talkshow host and film producer. She has worked with over 100 brands to achieve vocal renditions for various voice over projects.

She currently facilitates practical voice over learning sessions at the Voice Over Academy, Lagos, and offers coaching services to people who want to hone and improve their voice over reading skills.
