MOSOP re-echoes Saro-Wiwa’s death ahead memorial

MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke

Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has re-echoed its call on the Federal Government to revisit the issue of wrongful execution of nine Ogoni civil rights activists and leaders by the late General Sani Abacha on November 10, 1995.

President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, in a statement made available to The Guardian in Abuja, asserted that a review of the death sentences and executions was necessary to clear the names of the innocent men, who were wrongfully executed.

Nsuke explained: “It will bring some consolation and relief to the Ogoni people, who still suffer very deep pain as a result of the killings and, very importantly, it will help the people overcome the sad impression created by the government.

“Clearing Saro-Wiwa’s name along with the eight others is also necessary to build goodwill for the government and facilitate a recovery from the economic downturn, which came with the military repression of the 1990s,” he stressed.

According to him, the Ogoni have agreed to move forward, but are unable to forget Saro-Wiwa’s wish and request that their names should be cleared.

He added: “For us, a celebration will still be far away until this very issue is laid to rest, no matter how much success and development strides we achieve.”

The activist, therefore, urged the Ogoni, especially the youths, to remain calm, even in the face  of provocation, warning: “There are people among the Ogoni, who wish to see our desire for development fail, which we must strongly guard against.

“Every member of MOSOP must never abandon Saro-Wiwa and some 4,000 others, who lost their lives as a result of the Shell-backed military regressions. This is fundamental and we should never abandon these people.”
